Tourism
The tourism industry was the industry most affected by the economic problems brought on by the Homeland War after 1990, and it has yet to recover completely. This is best illustrated by the following statistics: in 1990, the tourism and hospitality industry had a capacity of 87 768 beds of which 29 832 were located in primary accommodations and had a total of 5 834 991 overnight stays, or 11% of the state total.

In 2003 there were 49 firms registered in the county in the branches of agriculture, hunting and forestry, which accounted for 144.1 million HRK of revenue, 7.9 million HRK in profits and 756 thousand HRK in losses. These industries provided employment for 356 people, whose average net monthly wages were 2690 HRK.

Macroeconomic Trends
In 2003, the County had a total of 3193 registered firms, of which 2149 submitted their annual statistical report. According to these statistics, the County’s economy had a total of 7.2 billion HRK in revenue, 453.4 million HRK in profits and 282.1 million HRK in losses. In that same year, 18 502 people were employed in the County, with an average monthly salary of 3064 HRK, a nominal increase in 7.1%, and a real increase in 5.0% over 2002.

Territory and Demographic Trends
The Dubrovacko – Neretvanska County is one of the smallest counties in Croatia, both by its land area and by its population. It has an area of 1782.49 square kilometres, with a population of 126 329 according to the 1991 census. This makes the population density 70.87 inhabitants per square kilometre.
