The SDC has a total of 3223.7 km of modern roads, of which 772.52 km are state roads, 754.2 km are regional roads, and 1697.06 km are local roads, not including city networks. In July 2002 construction began on the 29.7 km section of the future highway between Zagreb and Split, Prgomet-Dugopolje, which should be completed by the end of 2004.

Tourism

Tourism is one of the most important economic sectors and sources of employment in the SDC. Considering the existing natural, cultural and other resources, tourism is one of the most perspective economic branches in the County. The County has a capacity of 96 894 beds which are mostly in private accommodations, specifically 66 162.

The SDC has a total of 276 182 ha of arable land, of which plough fields and gardens take up 42 615 ha, orchards take up 2946 ha, olive groves 3875 ha, vineyards 6311 ha, meadows 3130 ha, and grazing land 217 305 ha.

The Splitsko-dalmatinska County has an industrial tradition and an interesting and strong industrial potential. In 2002, the manufacturing industry accounted for 30.7% of the County’s economy, and employed 21% of the workforce. The maritime industry is a branch that has a centuries-old tradition in this part of Europe. At the end of 2003, the County’s commercial fleet had 49 ships with a total tonnage of 530 260 DWT.

The Splitsko-Dalmatinska County (SDC) occupies an area of 4572 square kilometres (approximately 8% of Croatia), and has a population of 463 676 people (approximately 10% of Croatia’s population), of which 19% are unemployed. About 74% of those employed work in business, and 26% work in other branches of the economy.
